We were around one of those big shiny board room tables, talking to the ASA about our hopes of working with them.<\/p>\n

“What are you doing about the royalties?” someone asked.<\/p>\n

We Royals jumped. We<\/em> are The Royalties<\/em>. But what was meant was\u00a0authors’ earnings.<\/p>\n

“You’ll have to change your name”.<\/p>\n

We all nodded, sadly. It was our worst moment so far. A\u00a0 moment of challenged identity. The Royalties\u2026.But who are we? ..who\u2026<\/p>\n

After\u00a0weeks of discussions, arguments, laughter, tears, bottles or red, bottles of white, liaisons, re-liaisons, lists of sensible names that could\u2019ve been dreamed up by a advertising agency focus group..you know the sort\u2026<\/p>\n

page-turners (yawn)<\/p>\n

publish (yawn)<\/p>\n

BookTube<\/p>\n

Unbound<\/p>\n

re:books (\u201csounds like shoes\u201d)<\/p>\n

Slowly the thought emerged: why be sensible about a name?<\/p>\n

How sensible was \u201cPenguin\u201d when they began?- But it quickly became one of the world\u2019s most loved names.<\/p>\n

What about naming it after our favourite book? Libby said.<\/p>\n

More arguments. More cheering for one title, then another. More wine. More dinners, more laisons. Names which got a consensus were found to have gone in the celestial sounding registry of names. (<\/em>You can imagine\u00a0 a wing-frocked, hugewinged Angel Gabriel with such a list)<\/em><\/p>\n

Lists were long, getting longer by the day. Fatefully, Wuthering Heights<\/i> was on everyone\u2019s list.<\/p>\n

I think it was Louise\u2019s idea:<\/p>\n
