But we managed to get about eighteen and roasted them for 5 minutes on PH S’s BBQ, What’s hard is prising them open. PH S showed me how to clamp the oyster in a newspaper glove, while digging at the hinge with a special two sided blade. We might have more luck with oysters than with fish.

I saved the remain of breakfast for our new neighbour T, but his boat was gone. When I saw it stream into the bay, I put the spare oysters in a bag and began to row towards him, but he set out to walk to me. We met at a jetty in between, me steadying my boat against the jetty with a bare and muddy foot. He was bringing me some rock lillies for my garden, because I’d admired his. (The pic up there is Rock Lillies- lovely, aren’t they! From their ugly stalks, you’d never guess). He accepted gladly, said he had an oyster knife, but said, with a sweet boyish shame, that he’d never shucked an oyster. I tried to demonstrate, but it was it’s a difficult thing to do in the air, particularly when you’re holding oars in each hand. I wished i’d done it better. Now writing this at 11.30 pm, I’m worrying he might still be trying to prise them open.

Overnight, S from New York sends me this: I’m one of those very relieved, and very
